What Is the Pikachu Illustrator?

The Pikachu Illustrator (ピカチュウイラストレーター) is a Japanese promo card distributed in 1998 as a prize in the CoroCoro Comic illustration contest. It was awarded to the top winners — making it the rarest Pokémon card ever officially distributed.

Unlike other promo cards, the Illustrator features a unique "Illustrator" stamp in place of the normal card type marker, and a special illustration by Atsuko Nishida — the original designer of Pikachu. Only approximately 39 copies are known to exist, though some estimates suggest up to 41.

Key fact

There is no "market price" for the Pikachu Illustrator. Because so few copies exist and sales are extremely rare, each sale is effectively a one-of-a-kind auction — the price is whatever two parties agree on.

Pikachu Illustrator Value by PSA Grade

Grade dramatically affects value — more so than virtually any other card. The 2022 PSA 10 sale was roughly 5x the price of a PSA 9 sold the previous year. Here are current estimated ranges:

PSA 10 (Gem Mint)
Only 1 known PSA 10. Irreplaceable.
$3M – $6M+
PSA 9 (Mint)
Very few known. Market-dependent.
$500K – $1.2M
PSA 8 (NM-MT)
Rare sales — extrapolated from PSA 9.
$200K – $400K
PSA 7 (NM)
Based on 2021 Heritage sale.
$100K – $200K
Ungraded / Raw
Extremely risky without authentication.
$50K – $150K

* All estimates are based on historical sales. Actual prices depend on buyer demand at time of sale.

Why Is It Worth So Much?

Extreme scarcity
39 known copies in existence. No reprint is possible — it was a one-time contest prize. This is as scarce as Pokémon cards get.
Cultural significance
Pikachu is the face of the franchise. The Illustrator card is the apex of Pikachu collecting — the grail above all grails.
Authentication challenge
Fakes exist. PSA-graded copies in sealed slabs are the only safe way to buy. This creates a premium for authenticated copies.
Celebrity ownership
Logan Paul famously wore one worth $5.275M at WrestleMania, putting it on global mainstream media.
Crossover collectibles market
Ultra-high-value cards compete with fine art, rare coins, and sports cards as investment vehicles for HNW collectors.
